Bärenkopf in the Nature Park Karwendel
The peaks surrounding Lake Achensee are popular tour destinations in the Karwendel and Rofan mountains. One of the most prominent and most Instagrammed peaks is the Bärenkopf. The rugged mountain with its sparse rock vegetation and mountain pine fields lies in the southeastern part of the Karwendel and affords gorgeous views. The tour to the Bärenkopf is one of the region’s highlights overlooking the valley and the turquoise-blue Lake Achensee which lies like a fjord between the mountains. Besides being part of the Nature Park Karwendel, the Bärenkopf was recognized as a landscape conservation area in its own right. Already in 1989 it was placed under protection to preserve the special characteristics and beauty of the landscape and its recreational value.
You can climb the Bärenkopf via the ravine forest of the Weißenbachtal valley or from the Zwölferkopf walking past the Bärenbadalm. Both routes take you through the rich biodiversity of the area. Many of the plant species that grow here are protected. There is so much to discover: Between the Weißenbachalm and the summit there is a high moor, and the top of the Bärenkopf boasts impressive craggy rock formations. All this can be experienced on extensive hikes which offer rewarding panoramic views.

The origin of the names Bärenkopf and Bärenbadalm (bear’s head and bear’s pasture) will most probably remain a mystery. No need to worry: Even though we see an increasing number of wild animals such as wolves or lynxes returning to the European Alps, an encounter with the Bärenkopf’s eponym is very unlikely. However, it’s easy to imagine the large, heavy mammals in this impressive landscape. The Bärenbadalm mountain hut is a popular destination for hikers and mountain bikers who enjoy homemade delicacies such as Kaiserschmarrn (a sweet, fluffy shredded pancake) and elderflower syrup. In winter, the Bärenkopf offers advanced ski tourers the perfect conditions for skiing in open terrain – spectacular deep snow descents and views of the wintry fjord inclusive!
